China and oversupply / Kiina ja ylituotanto
This week the Financial Times ran an article about the oversupply of goods in China. Using the sportswear company Li Ning as an example, the article sums up a major issue: “Previously, it pumped out its shoes and shirts, paying little attention to whether they were actually selling.” Last week, we visited Euro Kauppa in Helsinki. In the US the equivalent would be a 99-cent store, in the UK a pound store and in Australia a two-dollar shop; these are stores stocked with smaller mountains of sold goods, waiting for the second sale to the consumer. What do they sell? Anything you didn’t know you wanted or needed, cheaply and often made from plastic. T-shirts are also in abundance; in the case of Helsinki, tees with the coat of arms of Finland dominated. As for the unsold mountains, they perhaps constitute just one example of what the pursuit for unlimited economic growth looks like. Incidentally, this past week we finished consuming all of the natural resources for 2012, as marked by Earth Overshoot Day. Needless to say, this is not an issue for China but for us all. How do we transform the global economy?
Helsingin Sanomat julkaisi artikkelin Kiinan ylituotannosta, joka osittain perustui aiempaan Financial Times-lehden artikkeliin. Artikkeli puhuu tavaran myymättömistä vuorista. Pienempiä, jälleenmyyjälle myytyjä mutta viela kuluttajalle myymättomiä vuoria, löytyi Helsingin Euro Kaupasta, jossa viime viikolla kävimme. Osasta näistä kommenteista jotenkin toivottomalta tuntuvan tilanteen keskellä voi ammentaa tulevaisuudentoivoa:
“Mieleen tulee siis väistämättä kysymyksiä siitä, kuka tuotteet on tehnyt. Miksi ne ovat niin halpoja? Mistä ihmeestä ne todella tulevat?”
“…onko tarpeellista ostaa yhtään mitään, mikäli sen voisi ostaa huonolaatuisena?”
Mutta palatkaamme myymättä jääneen tavaran vuoriin: ne ovat vain yksi esimerkki siitä, miltä jatkuvan talouden kasvun tavoittely näyttää. Samaisella viikolla käytimme tämän vuoden luonnonvarat loppuun. Tämä ei siis ole ongelma Kiinalle, vaan meille kaikille. Kuinka muutamme maailmantalouden kokonaisvaltaisesti?
